The author, an American writer and journalist living in Israel, presents his humorous and vividly written memoir of New York's Jewish neighborhood of Borough Park in the 1970s and 1980s. Halevi is raised by his father, a Holocaust survivor, to see the postwar world as "a world hostile to Jews." He becomes a member of the extreme right-wing organization, the Jewish Defense League, led by Rabbi Meir Kahana, and participates in many of its actions, especially in support of Soviet Jews and their right to emigrate freely to Israel. Gradually, he emerges from Kahana's influence and seeks his own path to openness and generosity, and to himself
