The diversity of traditions on which European culture rests has reflected European thought since at least the time of modernism. European unity is probably understood as a movement of integration and encounter, but also of traumatic experiences and re-evaluation. The Modern World in the Mirror of Literature and Philosophy is therefore not a synthesis. The book aims to show in the individual contributions how this experience of diversity is concretized within and across disciplinary boundaries. Underlying such a conception is the desire to move beyond a one-sided focus on a particular methodology and out of an orientation towards an exclusively European conception of culture. Ultimately, the reflection of the modern world in the mirror of this broader view also provokes more general reflections on the meaning and method of the humanities at the beginning of the 21st century
