Bulgakov's masterpiece and final work, which rightly earned the author worldwide fame. Bulgakov's grotesque, multi-layered mystery unfolds and intertwines on several levels: it is as much a fantastical and symbolic picture of the times as it is a realistic depiction of the stifling atmosphere of Moscow in the 1920s and 1930s, a biblical apocrypha, an eschatological vision, and a sharp satire on the conditions of the time. Bulgakov began writing his "story of a modern Faust" in 1929 and, already blind, dictated the final revisions to his wife five days before his death in 1940.
The book is being published in a new translation by Světlana Glaserová, in which, unlike earlier translations, Margarita is not translated as Markétka, which is more in keeping with the content of the work.
