The diary of Margarete Schell, a Prague German, captures the author's personal experiences during her ten-month stay in Czechoslovak internment camps from her arrest during the Prague Uprising until March 1946. She spent the longest time in Bystřice u Benešova, a camp originally established by the Nazi occupation administration for people from mixed families. She smuggled the records, taken secretly on scraps of paper, to Germany when she was deported, and in 1957 her diary was published in Bonn. The publication was received quite critically because of the alleged imbalance of information in favour of the Czechs. The Czech translation is one of the first published contributions to the "small history" of this period. The diary itself is accompanied by available documentation, translations of contemporary responses to the German edition and a biographical essay on the author's complex fate.
