This is an authentic account from South Sudan, the world's youngest nation, whose territory has been plagued by armed conflict for decades. At the beginning of 2017, when the country was hit by a wave of critical food shortages, surgeon Tomas Sebek went on a mission for Doctors Without Borders to places where infectious and tropical diseases thrive. Having experienced trauma surgery in the cradle of voodoo in Haiti and war medicine in northern Afghanistan, he and his colleagues found themselves in an environment where the traditional healer and his alternative approach to the patient are far more respected than a Western-trained doctor. Compared to fixing fractures with paper or pouring boiling water on them, the surgical team's reputation in the eyes of the locals can only be raised by performing the first brain surgery on a South Sudanese teenager in the absolute wasteland surrounding the hospital in Agok.
