Sidonie Nádherná is known to the Czech and European cultural public as the friend of poet Rainer M. Rilke and the "bride before God" of Karl Kraus, for whom her castle in Vrchotovy Janovice became a second home and an oasis of calm in a turbulent world. In her book, Alena Wagnerová presents her as an extraordinarily interesting personality whose life was deeply marked by all the changes and disasters that befell Central Europe in the 20th century - from the collapse of Austria-Hungary through the Nazi occupation, when Vrchotovy Janovice became part of an SS training ground, to her departure into exile in England after the communist coup in 1948, where Sidonie Nádherná died in 1950.
