The author presents a terrifying vision of a society converted into numbers and mechanisms, whose members have lost even their human names. The main character "named" D 503 is a mathematician, a designer of a spaceship, and the arrangement of society seems to him quite right and natural. But that's only until he meets the unpredictable and provocative "I 330". Under her influence, he becomes involved in a strange conspiracy and finds the depths of his feelings both frightening and attractive. The novel is the earliest of the classic anti-utopias, such as Huxley's The End of Civilization and Bradbury's 451° Fahrenheit, and in many motifs is a kind of prefigurement of Orwell's 1984.
