This book is the story of the unlikely survival of a name and the people who bear it.
Before 1938, Moravia and Brno were not only home to the wealthy Löw-Beer family of Jewish industrialists, but also a place where they could fully realize their potential in business, culture, and social life. Czechoslovakia represented the pinnacle of European modernism, and they set the tone. And then, in 1938, everything collapsed, they had to fight for their lives, they lost everything. Those who managed to escape scattered around the world. They went wherever they were allowed to go; not a single one of them survived in Czechoslovakia. After the war, there was a glimmer of hope, but their property soon passed into the hands of the communist regime and the stories of their original owners were doomed to oblivion. However, they continued to circulate among the survivors, and thanks to them, the family survived.
In 2010, one of its members, Daniel Low-Beer, began visiting his relatives literally all over the world and collecting fragments of what remained – stories about escaping from the ghetto, about life in the 1920s and 1930s, and about fleeing Czechoslovakia.
