Georg Picht's slim volume discusses the theme of the history of the traditional conception of experience and time. It was originally a 1957 lecture intended for dialogue between theologians and physicists. In it, Picht draws on the notion of experience in Aristotle in particular to show how even the concept of objective experience in modern science is still rooted in the tradition of Greek ontology. By analysing Kant's conception of experience and time, he shows how here too - as in the Aristotelian conception of the zóon logon echon - man is understood in the last instance in a non-agency. Picht is concerned with overcoming the negation of history associated with this tradition: the experience of history cannot be squeezed into forms of experience in which real history is suppressed. Hence the need for a new conception of time and truth - time is no longer a representation of being, but is itself a being that makes the future present, and truth no longer means the capture of what is always and outside of time, but itself has a historical nature.
