The concept of education has evolved since the earliest philosophical systems, which explored the possibility of understanding the world and thus generalizing experience that could be passed down through generations. Therefore, the book traces its roots to the Greek intellectual tradition—from Plato’s noetic skepticism through the Roman ideals of Good and Virtue—and goes on to examine the Christian theological approach, culminating in the Enlightenment and the development of the sciences in the 19th century.
