The tragic events of the years of occupation form the middle part of the memoirs, which the author decided to write at the age of ninety-two. Her first book is an extraordinary testimony of an astute observer who sensitively, but without sentimentality, projects to the readers the panorama of almost the whole century. She guides readers (and viewers of the photographs and documents) through layers of time and memory and across layers of national, social and cultural strata. As Staša Fleischmann is a photographer, her testimony is equally visual. Many of the photographs can be considered absolutely unique historical documents of the time, the value of which is enhanced by the fact that, with a few exceptions, they are published here for the first time.
