The book The Thing of Thought, which Martin Heidegger dedicated to himself on his eightieth birthday in 1969, is a kind of philosophical memento. This collection of texts from the first half of the 1960s contains, among other things, two of Heidegger's most important texts ever.

In the Freiburg Lecture, Time and Being, the author returns after thirty-five years from the position of his late thought to the problem of the third - never finished and supposedly burned - section of his major work Being and Time. The notoriously difficult text, which is appearing in English translation for the first time, demonstrates that when we think without prejudice about the being of what is, we are inevitably brought before the question after time, and when we subsequently think about time, we are inevitably brought back to the question after being. The material relation of both - being and time, time and being - is then grasped by Heidegger in the central concept of his late work: the event of appropriation (Ereignis).

The Paris lecture, The End of Philosophy and the Task of Thought, the classic translation of which has been overlooked again for the present edition, formulates the thesis that philosophy as the science of being as being ends in our epoch because the individual sciences have already dismantled the totality of being in its entirety among themselves. The task of thought, which is the heir of philosophy, is then, according to Heidegger, to think through the material relations hidden in the world of being, which opens up with time and in which all being is only just becoming apparent and graspable - that is, to think through precisely what the author himself attempted in his lecture Time and Being.
