Paul Cox's book Building Blocks (2018) is a record of the preparation of a group exhibition of the artist's work at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris in 2005. It is based on the artist's blog, which he set up for the occasion. Paul Cox was originally an architect, and now works in illustration and graphic design. The gradual recording of the process of the exhibition's creation reveals the specific strategies Cox employs in his illustration and design work. The subtle linking of themes and the extensive validity of the connections found can be beneficial to any artist. There are not many titles that focus on the theory of illustration, and very few that are inspiring and can speak to different approaches to the work. For art students and the wider public, the publication of this title is an exceptional opportunity to be introduced to a book that is truly dedicated to illustration and is not 'just' someone's catalogue.
