The novel "Geschwister Tanner" was first published by Bruno Cassirer in Berlin in 1907; this translation is from the 1986 edition published by Suhrkamp.
Largely autobiographical, yet written in an unusually poetic language, the novel depicts the circumstances of the Tanner siblings' family as Walser (1878-1956) undoubtedly experienced them himself. Simon Tanner observes the world dispassionately and comes into unusual conflicts with a world of convention, of conforming, career and competition corrupted people, which he provokes with his imagination, humour and common sense. With a light rucksack and open, incorruptible eyes, this modern vagabond traverses the world, obsessed with the desire for freedom and the search for the true quality of life, which appears to his fresh, sensitive senses in a light not yet distorted.
