The publication prepared by the FOIBOS BOOKS publishing house Famous Villas of Prague 6 - Střešovice presents another segment of modern villa development, concentrated after Osada Baba, Hanspaulka and Bubenec on one important part of Prague 6 - Střešovice. This undoubtedly admirable enclave of residential housing has at the same time one specific characteristic of its development, which is due not only to the basic reasoning, when from the very beginning it was intended for residential housing in the city plans, but above all to the announced competition for a garden city, the results of which were subsequently brought to life by regulatory plans and great architecture. But this was not the only specific feature of the area.

Unlike Hanspaulka, or especially Bubenec, which is characterized by a preponderance of ostentatious villa buildings, the intention was to create a garden city, composed of houses, semi-detached houses or terraced houses, not of a luxurious, ostentatious format, but in principle two-, three- and four-room houses, built by building cooperatives, and therefore available mainly to the official class of employees of state or public institutions. It was the relatively strict rules, which to some extent copied the theory and practice of Ebenezer Howard in establishing such units abroad, that gave the whole district an unmistakable character not found in other neighbourhoods conceived in this way.

The reader will read about the whole contest and the construction of the resulting houses in great detail in the following chapters. In spite of this important part of the development of the cadastral area of Střešovice, we cannot omit the individual villa development, which, as in other districts of Prague 6, provides important information not only about important or sometimes lesser-known or even unknown architects, but above all interesting curricula of builders, which are often quite revelatory. These impressive personality profiles, most of them from the First Republic, are part of the individual entries devoted to well-known and lesser-known buildings and form the core of the book.
