Famous Villas of Prague 10 follows identically conceived publications about exceptional family houses and villas with a story about them, their builders and creators. The book presents fifty medallions of well-known and unknown buildings realized from the end of the 19th century to the present day. The family houses and villas in Vinohrady, Vršovice, Strašnice, Michela and Záběhlice, documented with rich pictorial material, especially contemporary plans, are set in a much broader context than just local ones. Thanks to them, we learn from the accompanying chapters how construction was done under socialism, how new materials influenced the aesthetics of functionalism, and that a future collaborator of the famous American architect Frank L. Wright wanted to build the Strašnice colony of family houses out of prefabricated cranes as early as 1919.
