The first volume of the new translation of the famous grotesque lyric by the German writer Christian Morgenstern (1871-1914) is also the first ever translation into Czech based on Morgenstern's collected writings, reflecting the insights and context that the critical edition brings. These include the publication of many hitherto unknown texts and the dispelling of the "misty haze" surrounding the poet's work. For decades, this has been seen exclusively through the lens of books arranged after his death. The editions combined the texts of the author's collections with those of his estate, and there was an inorganic ordering of poems and sometimes interference with the original manuscripts. The new translation thus offers readers the most comprehensive Czech view of Morgenstern's grotesque poetry to date. Above all, it attempts to convey the world of a poet whose inspiration has not been practically lost with the passage of time, but on the contrary, it often appears to be relevant today.
