Sancta Familia

The book was created by brothers Tomáš and Martin Wels as a Christmas present for their parents in 1938. They managed to capture the everyday life of their family in Prague at the end of the 1930s. The volume is made up of dialogues and scenes from the Wels family life, in many ways still typical today, in others unimaginable. The author of the illustrations is the artistically gifted younger of the siblings, Martin, from whose surviving works we published his calligraphic transcription and illustrations for Jaroslav Vrchlický's book Spring Romance. 

The book alternates between Czech and German, reflecting the language situation in Prague at the time. English and French also appear. All texts are translated and the graphic design makes the book linguistically accessible not only to Czech readers but also to speakers of other languages. For children aged 11 and up.
