The first Czech edition of a representative collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls. This edition of the so-called Qumran manuscripts contains 2,000-year-old texts of the Jewish community that were found in the 1940s in the caves near the Dead Sea. This is the first time that Czech readers have been given a translation of these texts, which provide an insight into Judaism in the period before the fall of the Second Temple of Jerusalem (70 AD), a time that was decisive for the emergence of Christianity. The book contains two extensive introductions by S. Segert and J. Dušek and dozens of original Qumran texts with their translations into Czech. Among the most important texts are undoubtedly those that directly relate to the Qumran way of life, such as the Order of Unity, the Order of the Congregation, the Damascus Writings, the War Order, but also, for example, the mysterious Copper Scroll. The selection includes orders, regulations, interpretations and paraphrases of biblical books, poetic and liturgical texts, and other literature.
