Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) is one of the key figures of 20th century philosophy and his work one of the main sources of modern analytic philosophy. His thought fulfilled the universal claim of philosophy and his theory of meaning inspired ethnologists and linguists, among others. The present selection of notes written in the margins of his philosophical writings and devoted both to the nature of philosophical work and to questions of art or religion gives a hint of this transcendence beyond philosophy. The editorial form of the Miscellaneous Notes, which, like most of Wittgenstein's work, was published posthumously, is the result of the work of his editors. The editors have arranged the notes chronologically, which makes it possible to follow the development of Wittgenstein's philosophical and general views, but they have also made them easier to navigate by means of a subject index. The identification of the sources of the Miscellaneous Notes, whose translation has been completed and revised for this edition, allows them to be read alongside the originals in Wittgenstein's electronically accessible estate.
