In the Translator's Note, Martin Hilský writes: "The enormous power and universality of this tragedy lies in the fact that the intimate story of fateful love is thwarted by the intolerance and hatred of those around it. The key to the specific form this hatred takes is not in Shakespeare's text, but in the society in which this tragedy is performed and perceived. Shakespeare did not have to write the specific reasons for the feud between the Montagues and the Capulets, because every age and every society, including today's, always writes those for itself."
