In The Presence of God in History, Fackenheim presents his concept of the "founding experiences" of Judaism - shared, re-presented experiences that affirm belief in an unlimited God present in limited human history. He considers this belief, including its inevitable paradoxes, to be central to both Judaism and Christianity, which he describes as "historical religions." The question for Judaism today, then, is how to reconcile the God of history with the unprecedented event of the Holocaust. Moreover, both Judaism and Christianity have had to come to terms with secularism over the last century: if the God of the Bible is the God of all history, he must also be the God of contemporary secular history, including modern catastrophes such as the Holocaust and Hiroshima. The author concludes by suggesting the possibility of a new, post-religious and post-secular situation
