Prague Castle is the traditional seat of state power and its strong position as a symbol of Czech or Czechoslovak statehood was developed by the first Czechoslovak President T. G. Masaryk, who made it his residence and the place of representation of the young democratic state. The publication focuses on the transformation of Prague Castle in the period from 1948 to 1968 in the context of the changing view of the functions that the traditional seat of state power should fulfil. The President and his office played a significant role in defining these functions, while ideologues of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia and representatives of Czechoslovak art, architecture and science were also involved in the process. The work focuses on short-term and permanent architectural modifications of the castle grounds aimed at the general public and on the development of the local exhibition programme. It also traces the institutional background of this transformation.
