The second volume of Gadamer's project of philosophical hermeneutics selectively summarizes texts published after the first edition of Truth and Method in 1960. In them, Gadamer copes with the critical response to his book, both by deepening and expanding historically and by analytically refining the key points of the first volume.

Key stimuli included public debates with supporters of methodological hermeneutics E. Betti, E. D. Hirsch Jr., or H. Albert (as early as the early 1960s), with J. Habermas, K.-O. Apel, or A. Wellmer on the universality of hermeneutics (from 1967, first in discussions with the Critical Theory of the Methodology of the Social Sciences), or with French post-structuralist thinking represented by the deconstruction of J. Derrida (starting in 1981).

Gadamer reopens the questions of the relationship between hermeneutic experience and methodological knowledge, the relationship to language and tradition, the interpretation of the concept of "prejudice" or the relationship to the criticism of ideology, etc. In numerous introductions, from shifted perspectives and with references to abundant sources from the history of thought, he offers figures of argument and concrete historical evidence for the basic theses of universal hermeneutics, i.e. for considerations about the fundamentally non-methodical essence of "hermeneutic experience", for the concept of the concept of "experience" and "experiencing" (as opposed to the concepts of "experience" and "living", tied to the subject) as something we go through, which transcends subjectivity and becomes "event" and "event", and finally for his universal concept of "understanding" as the unity of the understander and the understood, as the emergence from oneself to another self, as the understanding's outlook and view of the world, which consistently passes into the view of oneself.
