As the Danube monarchy draws to a close, Prague still breathes the air of old majestic times; at the same time, however, the city is already being transformed into a modern European metropolis: wide boulevards are being built in place of the old Jewish quarter, bridges are arching over the banks of the Vltava and the first train from Vienna arrives at the station. Where until recently the emperor and his guard had strolled, independence was soon proclaimed and an independent republic was established. The photographic documents in this book not only show many historical upheavals, but also the everyday life of the people of Prague. Pavel Scheufler selected more than 140 photographs, which he edited and supplemented with texts. The result is a guide to reading these old photographs and listening to the exciting stories they have to tell us.
