Kant's 1764 work, Observations on the Sense of the Beautiful and the Sublime, holds a special position in the totality of his work. It prefigures the Critique of Judgement (1790) in its subject matter, yet it belongs to Kant's pre-critical period. Moreover, it is a popular work, intended for a wider public. Here Kant presents philosophical observations and formulates hypotheses of principles operating behind phenomena, which he then verifies on observed material. The actual subject of the work is the higher or finer sensations (experiences and pleasures), the basis of which Kant sees in the combination of the sensations of the beautiful and the sublime for which man has a feeling. At the same time, Kant explores their operation in morality, in people of different temperaments, in the relationship between men and women, and in the characters of nations. In this sense, it is a stimulating work not only for philosophers.
