Anne Frank's written legacy also includes her so-called "Book of Stories," of which she writes in her diary on August 7, 1943, "A few weeks ago I started a story, a completely made-up story, and it has taken such a liking that my writing family is growing comfortably." Less than a month later, she begins transcribing the "written family" into a special, large hardcover notebook (actually a ledger). On the first page she wrote: "Tales and Incidents from the Back House, Narrated by Anne Frank"; at the bottom of the same page she noted: "Dedicated: Thursday, September 2, 1943".

As the title suggests, the stories are in two categories, namely 'completely fictional' stories, and narratives that describe incidents of life in the Home Office. Anne Frank has included a table of contents at the end of the book, in which she also indicates to which category each text belongs.

Most of the stories were apparently first sketched by Anne on single sheets of paper and then transcribed completely into a story book, as there are hardly any crossed-out passages or other corrections. The earliest story is dated December 8, 1942, another indication that the scrapbook contains completely rewritten earlier versions; the last story is dated May 12, 1944. Anne also took several stories into a rewritten version of the diary (version B), and her father Otto Frank took even more into Het Achterhuis (The Back House) after the war, the first edition of which was published in 1947.
