The first novel by the German writer W. G. Sebald (1944-2001) from 1988 became the starting point for the work of this later internationally acclaimed author. The collection of three longer texts, which bears the subtitle Elementary Poem, recounts in poetic form the life and work of three different men from different eras, Matthias Grünewald, master of the Isenheim Altar, the naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller of the Bering Expedition to Alaska, and the author himself. This is another stunning prose work by Sebald, full of poetry without metre or rhyme.
