The biography, written by Curie's daughter Ève, is not only a description of her scientific career, but also an insider's view, a plastic portrayal of the whole personality of this extraordinary woman, her hopes and disappointments, joys and pains. Because of its readability, literary quality and emotional depth, this biography has lost none of its impact, even sixty years after it was written. During the previous regime, the biography was published several times in this country, most recently in 1971, and each time it was noticeably abridged and censored. Thus, the reader does not learn, for example, about the scientist's critical views on Russian domination in Poland, her contacts with Western statesmen, her visit to President Masaryk, or Pierre Curie's interest in spiritualism. Madame Curie is published for the first time in its complete form, as written by the author, with an afterword by the leading Czech nuclear scientist Dana Drábová.
