In Kiev I heard a voice that spoke to me directly and simultaneously: the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops was imminent. Zhadan was reading his poems in one of the clubs, completely civil, without pathos. With each of them, a picture of eastern Ukraine emerged in front of me; they expressed what I myself had experienced in the east, what surprised and puzzled me, what I often did not understand, and what attracted me all the more.

Zhadan is a poet of reflection, with a minimum of his own emotions. In his work, no one can read whether he has a wife or a child, whether he lives in a house or a basement apartment - we learn nothing about him. But the eastern space in his verse! So airy, powerful and beautiful - not to mention the fact that there is a war raging in it, that it will never be the same as it was before.
