The aim of the book is to introduce the Czech reader to the field of film studies as an equal partner of other social sciences. The aim is to select exemplary texts representing the most important contemporary currents of thought and personalities of film historiography. These currents can be schematically identified by three terms: new film history, socio-cultural history of cinema, and media archaeology. The selected texts are grouped into five themes: theories of film and media historiography, early cinema, the transition between classical and post-classical cinema, film sound, intermediality and media history.
