Although the Mafia was born on the ruins of the feudal system, it only flourished with the development of democracy and capitalism. It soon took root in Naples, Sicily and Calabria and owed its rise to the criminal pacts it made with parts of the political and social elite.

This book reconstructs the political history of the mafias and their expansion on the European continent. The author traces their cradle and finds the first actors of the story: corrupt nobles, unscrupulous socialites, wealthy landlords, assassins... He uncovers the invisible links of these "criminal sects" to the nascent democracy and traces their conquest of America.

With the Cold War, a profiteering mutation of mafia networks emerges, and the author unravels their methods of parasitizing the liberal economy. We are in the midst of a boom in drug trafficking, the emergence of tax havens, the compromise of the Vatican bank and real estate scandals, with mafia bosses shaking hands with politicians, industrialists and financiers. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, new opaque groups are growing in Europe, using this "model" to conquer more territory...
