The author wrote on the bookmark:
One day in the winter of 1971, I was sitting with Mr. Beneš in the sauna, where he was always sweating late, and I said that we could prepare a beautiful book together in advance, very far in advance: his paintings would be in it, and I would write a story or essay for each one. He said happily: "Yes. And it would be a very expensive book. About two hundred and fifty crowns." - That didn't work out: first, I didn't have the time or the ideas to write such a fancy book for two hundred and fifty crowns, and then Vlastimil Beneš died (1919-1981). What happened then is in this book, which I wrote intermittently, and in parts I hid it somewhere. I meant to write Memoirs: as a participant in the events of 1967-1968, so remembered today. But what had just happened distracted me from it and demanded to be written down. I think that my Memoirs are now an even better contribution to those glorious events: namely, how it went on... And younger memoirists may wonder.
In accordance with Mr. Benes's original consent, I have compiled this picture book with the wish that it should not be too expensive: up to two hundred and fifty crowns.
