The Life of Moses, one of Gregory's crowning works, is meant to be an answer to the question of what perfect virtue consists in. In an attempt to clarify for readers the nature of perfection, the author first narrates and then interprets step by step the biblical account of Moses. The interpretation offered is in the spirit of ancient allegorical exegesis: Gregory leads his readers to see a higher meaning in the words of Scripture. The story of the Egyptian prince and the liberation of the people of Israel thus becomes a timeless narrative of the struggle of the human soul to break free from the grip of the senses and irrational movements, to develop virtue, and to know ever more fully who God is. In the course of the writing, it becomes clear that the pursuit of perfect virtue and the desire to know God are closely related. Above all, the key to both is the willingness not to cling to anything that has already been achieved and to keep striving for something even more perfect. Only a person who is constantly transcending his own limits can know the infinite God because he is becoming like Him.
