The popularizing book Modern typography: an essay in critical history (1992) is a major and profound contribution to the subject of printing and typography and is the life work of Robin Kinross, which has become a staple of typographic literature over time. In it, Kinross comes up with the original idea that modernism in typography did not emerge until the late 1920s, but already with the self-reflection of printing and the development of the rationalization of printing processes and tools. Kinross records this movement around 1700, and from there he traces the development of so-called modernist typography. Thus, unlike most histories of typography, he does not see modernism as a departure from traditional typography, but at the same time considers aspects other than the visual, thus avoiding the bibliophilic nostalgia so typical of typographic culture. The book contains many colour examples of typographic work.
