The book The Material Conditions of Freedom introduces the idea of a universal basic income, which is essentially a citizen's salary paid unconditionally to every member of society to enable them to choose more freely the work they wish to do. This does not necessarily have to be paid work but, for example, voluntary work, which, unlike the 'jobs' of stock market speculators, consultancy experts and, after all, most politicians, can be considered socially beneficial.

The author traces the development of the idea of basic income from its origins in the late 18th century in the work of Thomas Paine, defines the concept and discusses the case of the state of Alaska, where basic income has been in place since 1982. He finds his argumentative justification in the reflections on the conditions of individual freedom in prominent thinkers of the past (Aristotle, Cicero, Robespierre, etc.).
