The Sanskrit word "mandala" means circle. It can be represented in the field of religious rituals or in psychology. As psychological phenomena, mandalas occur spontaneously in dreams, in certain conflict states and in schizophrenia. Very often they contain a quadrilateral or multiple of four in the form of a cross, star, square, octagon, etc. This is a self-healing attempt of nature, which in the individual constellates the contact between consciousness and unconsciousness and unites seemingly irreconcilable opposites. Such images have a considerable therapeutic effect on their maker, but only when they appear spontaneously.
The committee contains three of Jung's contributions on the subject of mandalas: "On the Empiricism of the Individuation Process", "On the Symbolism of the Mandala", "Mandalas". The first is an analysis of Jung's patient Mrs. X, the second deals with the creations of various patients, and the third is a general treatise on the phenomenon.
