Lüneburská varianta

Italian author Paolo Maurensig (*1943), whose novel became famous in Italy and abroad, introduces the Lüneburg variant to Czech readers for the first time. The book is often compared to Stefan Zweig's Chess Novel, and the two works indeed share a number of common motifs: a distinct pair of chess opponents, the theme of the struggle between good and evil, an interest in chess psychology, even pathology... We are drawn into the plot very quickly. The newspapers report the mysterious death (was it suicide or murder?) of Dieter Frisch, a successful businessman and chess expert. Soon a young, talented and enthusiastic chess apprentice Hans Mayer and his mysterious teacher Tabori enter the scene, and there is an unusual chess variation that some might like to forget. How far can chess take a person (for better or worse)? And what if everything is just one big chess game? Maybe even life?
