Just as the Critique of Pure Reason (1781, 17872) was, according to Kant, concerned with reason in relation to nature, the Critique of Practical Reason (1788) deals with reason in relation to the second domain in question, that of freedom. It represents Kant's most important work devoted to practical philosophy, presenting in full the theory of the moral law already known from the Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals (1785). But it also contains Kant's definitive answer to the question of metaphysics. While the notions of God and the immortality of the soul remain as mere ideas in the field of theoretical reason without support, they acquire through the notion of freedom demonstrated by the existence of the moral law "permanence and objective reality, i.e. their possibility is proved by the fact that freedom is real, since this idea is revealed through the moral law." The Critique of Practical Reason thus presents the core of Kant's reformed notion of metaphysics, which was taken up by the generation of so-called German Idealism.
