The theme of the new issue of Contradictions is ecosocialism in post-communist countries.
Climate change poses an existential challenge for humanity. The need to do something is widely recognized, but the accumulation of capital continues relentlessly, even turning crises into new opportunities for exploitation and valorization. The choice between revolutionary transformation and social destruction has never been so stark. This ecological crisis forces us to reevaluate the socialist legacy in relation to nature, including the ambiguous attitude towards nature in Eastern European Marxism. Although this stance was characterized by a belief in the primacy of the productive forces and a Promethean idea of conquering nature, it also included some voices of dissent and proposals for alternative paths to a socialist future. In the current issue of Contradictions, we address this complicated legacy, its historical contexts, and its implications for today’s theory and practice.
