In this book, the well-known spiritual author, drawing on his liberal Judaism and his own life experience when his teenage son died of a terminal illness, addresses the topic of midlife crisis. He uses the biblical figure of Ecclesiastes as his guide as he takes stock at mid-life. He has attained all material possessions, experienced success, wealth, pleasure, then even turned to the spiritual path, learning thoroughly about it too - and yet he feels a sense of futility and emptiness. Kushner, in his typically realistic manner, but full of empathy and wisdom, writes about the fallacies of the headlong pursuit of success and possessions, turning his attention to what makes life truly meaningful, and leading one to inner maturity. The author states, "This book is not about how to be happy or how to be popular. There are plenty of other books for that. It's about how to be successful, but not in the sense most people use it. Because it's about how to be human, how to live with the feeling that you are more than a moth that lives for a moment and then disappears.
