Kalendář
Martin Wels (1925-1944), a gifted Jewish boy, drew a calendar for 1941 at the age of fifteen. Before being transported to Terezín, he studied at the Officina Pragensis, a private art school in Prague, which produced a number of important artists. However, his life was violently ended by the liquidation of the Terezin family camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau on the night of 8-9 March 1944.
The calendar demonstrates Martin's artistic talent. His drawings testify to the gentle soul of a young man who is still attracted to boyish games or the customs associated with the months of the year. They breathe a joyful attachment to the wonder and colour of life, although Martin had little reason for it at the time. His art of drawing speaks to us all the more powerfully.
The accompanying text was written by Pavel Holeka.
The calendar, dated 1941, has been graphically adapted for contemporary use.
