Jaroslav Benda 1882 - 1970 - CZ

This publication presents Jaroslav Benda as a typographer. Due to his lifelong interest in books and type, his work is presented from a typographic point of view. It is the only section that accompanied Benda in all stages and branches of his creative activity and has not been treated yet. The main part of the book is therefore an analysis of Benda's works in which typography appears. The rest of the broad spectrum of Benda's work, which is not so closely related to typography, is included in the book in a longer introductory chapter, presenting examples for the others. For us, the key to assembling a possible overview of the work was Bend's memoirs, Years with Artists (1969) and Of Years of Work and Friendship (1962), from which we have attempted to translate a number of Bend's quotations that most accurately describe the circumstances of the creation and subsequent fate of his designs and works.
