Martin Buber's most famous book, Me and You, written in 1923, is a unique contribution to the philosophy of dialogue. Here Buber distinguishes between two basic settings, characterized by the terms "I-Thou" and "I-One". Whereas in the "I-Thou" stance one creates experience, categorizes what is separate from it, and treats it as a thing, in the "I-Thou" stance the whole participates in a relationship in which one transforms the other. What is behind the alienation and unfulfillment in modern society is that the "I-Thou" way is neglected. It is only in the I-Thou relationship that the individual's Self can fully develop, and every I-Thou relationship is ultimately a relationship with God, who is the eternal You.
Buber's translated book, which is actually a collection of shorter or longer aphorisms, is a masterly expression of realities that are difficult to grasp, although they are an integral part of the world of human relationships.
This is the first time the work is being published in English in its final form, which the author published in his Collected Writings in 1962.
