The Self and Defense Mechanisms is one of the classic, foundational psychoanalytic texts. Anna Freud, daughter of Sigmund Freud, clearly shows here that psychoanalysis is not exclusively concerned with the human unconscious. She shows that, in fact, the self and its disorders have always been the object of interest of psychoanalysis - and that dealing with the unconscious has served to restore the self and its functions. In this book, the author addresses a specific problem - the means by which the self defends itself against unpleasant states and anxieties and attempts to manage impulsive actions, affects and instinctual demands.
