The Idea is the first important work by Erwin Panofsky, a famous art historian who was mainly devoted to iconography and iconology. Based on a lecture series organized by E. Cassirer at the Warburg Institute in London, this book examines the transformations of the Platonic concept of the "idea" from ancient art to Michelangelo and Dürer. It charts the main milestones in the development of aesthetic theories and uses texts by ancient and Renaissance art theorists and artists themselves to show how the concept gradually came to be used in a way completely contrary to Plato's original intention.
