A trip to Paris and an uncomfortable bus full of fussing children. While the girls gush over the beauty of the stuffed animal, the two giant boys next to them are deadly serious about whether shit is on fire. Universes separated by a narrow alley. At the heart of Shabach's stories is the world of childhood and adolescence in a time when "Honor the work, comrade" was the salute and pioneers tested their courage by electrocuting themselves. Relationships between fathers and sons, between men and women and stubborn old men who argue over a beer about how much a Kodiak bear measures. Here, a little girl watches the world of men from the roof of her house and gradually abandons the idea of changing her gender, while the son of an army officer sabotages his bulletin board with the weekly menu.

Shit's Burning is a collection of three short stories pieced together like shards of an unbreakable plastic glass, which Shabach's characters raise and toast. The book became a prequel to the film Cinderella.
