The subject of the book is a generally comprehensible, clear reconstruction of Hegel's philosophy of religion. The author uses as a source Hegel's lectures on the subject held at the University of Berlin, especially those delivered there in 1827, which represent his most mature contribution to the subject. In the present work, the author draws on contemporary foreign literature on the subject, but he also draws on the valuable contributions of Czech authors, namely O. Navrátilová and T. Matějčková, and, among the older ones, M. Sobotka and L. Major.
The present work differs from these older Czech contributions mainly in its monographic nature (it is not a contribution to a particular partial aspect of Hegel's doctrine of religion, but seeks to cover its whole). Despite the monographic nature of his contribution, the author seeks to place the philosophy of religion in the broader context of Hegel's system, and to interpret it from there. He does so, however, only to the extent that it contributes to an understanding of the actual subject of the publication. What distinguishes this book from both domestic and foreign contributions devoted to Hegel's philosophy of religion is that it consistently compares Hegel's interpretation of Christianity with the doctrines of Christian orthodoxy. It is against this theological background that the author believes the new that Hegel brings emerges in much clearer contours and therefore becomes more comprehensible and understandable to the reader. In order to strengthen this feature (clarity) of his contribution, the author also takes into account, at some of the nodal points of Hegel's doctrine, its contemporary condition, the situation of theology at the time, and the first beginnings of a field that did not yet exist in a developed form in Hegel's time, namely religious studies.
The work consists of two main parts, the first is devoted to a brief characterization of Hegel's logic, natural philosophy and philosophy of spirit, the second contains a rather detailed interpretation of a special part of the philosophy of spirit, namely Hegel's conception of religion and its most perfect form, namely Christianity. The author proceeds mainly historically, but on important points he also draws attention to the influence of Hegel's doctrine on contemporary thought.
The book is intended primarily for our philosophers, theologians and religious scholars, but it can also serve as a study text for university students in these fields. For the wider circles of our educated public, it can also serve as a first introduction to the study of Hegel's philosophy in general.
