The book by one of our leading architects Michal Kohout is about the importance and roles of architecture in society. Building houses and caring for the built environment is a fascinating activity that touches many areas of human action and knowledge and has a practical impact on each of us. This collection of readable reflections is therefore for anyone who cares about the aesthetic and functional nature of the environment in which we live and how it affects us. The author considers not only the content and form of buildings, but also the categories of their users and creators, including many excursions into history to illustrate the roots or context of the phenomenon described.
A fitting motto for the entire book would undoubtedly be the famous statement by the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, which the author also quotes in the book: "The limits of architecture are the limits of the society it serves."
