In this book, Collège de France professor Alain de Libera, whose seminal 1991 monograph Penser au Moyen Âge and a long line of other revelatory articles and book-length analyses have substantially changed the historiography of medieval thought, presents a coherent essay on the complex historicity of medieval philosophy within its institutional and political frameworks. De Liber's book is significantly polemical against the usual synoptic presentations of "medieval thought" in the singular; the author's intention is certainly not to present a textbook-balanced survey of all major figures and themes. His main aim is to present different constellations of how the ancient heritage passed through the centuries designated as medieval and acquired - in Christian, Islamic and Jewish cultural settings - new accents and forms.
